Play

Every child has the right to play (Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child)

Children should be able to choose who they play with, how they play and organise their own play ~ Cwtch believe this is fundamental to their development and is a crucial part of a healthy and happy childhood. Play should be promoted in everything that we do – whether that is inside or outside in the big wide world. Cwtch endeavour to provide good spaces and plenty of time to play wherever possible.

Curiosity and Imagination

Children often have active imaginations, and they enjoy using their curiosity to explore the world around them.

Curiosity helps children be more observant, to think about things and try to work them out. When children explore their curiosity, they expand their vocabulary as they use language to describe what they’re thinking, seeing, hearing or experiencing. At Cwtch we believe that nurturing children’s curiosity and imagination is essential. We enable this by providing natural resources and real-life experiences for children to independently stimulate their own learning and experiences, and by modelling interests in the world around us to capture children’s interests, attention and imaginations with open ended questions, activities and resources.

Adventurous Learning

Life is an adventure!

Cwtch believe that providing a safe environment to allow adventurous play will help build children’s confidence, develop common sense, strength, co-ordination, agility and body confidence. Children are encouraged to explore what risks they may need to take to resolve their problems; this might be how they can build a see-saw with a round barrel and plank or how they might climb a tree without getting stuck or falling.

Healthy Eating

A healthy balanced diet is essential to a child’s development.

Cwtch believes that children should have access to healthy snacks and foods throughout their time with us ~ they also have the opportunities to explore how their food is grown, prepared, and where it comes from. Our rolling snacks allow children to independently decide when they wish to eat and choose from a selection of healthy items. Milk and water are also independently accessed whenever a child wishes.

Environment

When we talk about our environment, we talk about the natural world around us.

At Cwtch we want all children to explore and understand how important a sustainable environment is to our world. Children are involved in deciding on what materials and resources they might wish to use when learning and playing. They can come to understand the various materials we rely on, where they come from and how we can use them in harmony with the natural environment around us. Our settings work to reduce, reuse and recycle, endeavouring not to use single use plastic and not use materials that might harm our natural environment.
